Question: Mixing stylized imagery with cinema verite is not a very common practice, how did you come up with this approach?

Dominique Derrenger: Rowing is obviously a very repetitious sport, but it is also very beautiful to watch. Our first challenge was to break up the redundant nature without losing any of the high aesthetic qualities. By combining different frame-rates, raw stocks and film formats, and mixing in an abundant source of archival footage, we were able to keep it visually compelling. Because this film crosses into so many genres - Sports, History and Biography - I don't think it falls into a traditional category. I don't believe that filmmaking has to be limited to any cookie-cutter ideals. Like everything else, it needs to evolve in order to flourish, and this film is a complex combination of all of the many varied styles that have influenced and inspired this generation – my generation.
