Why a documentary about crew? It seems like
such an obscure subject.
Dominique Derrenger: I grew up in Berkeley and during high school I rowed at the Ebright Boathouse. That experience left a lasting impression on me, and I felt that even though crew had many old school virtues - like loyalty, teamwork, and perseverance - worth celebrating, the sport has never been captured before on film in any real depth. As I started researching the subject, I discovered that crew was the oldest sport at the University of California, and yet after 130 years it was still almost completely unchanged. The deeper I dug, the more interesting the story grew. There's an integrity to rowing that's been lost in almost every other team sport that I know, and I felt it was about time that somebody tried to tell this side of the story.
